Microsoft Office macros are a powerful feature, but they can also pose a significant security risk. Cybercriminals often use malicious macros as a gateway for malware. IT administrators must therefore take steps to optimize macro security in their organization. One effective method is to use Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to centrally control macro handling.

Why macro control is important
Macros are small programs found in Office documents that can perform automated tasks. However, they can also be abused by attackers to execute malware. Without appropriate security measures, macros can become a serious threat to a company's IT security.

Group policies as a central control method

Centrally deactivate macros
One of the safest methods is to disable macros completely. This can be achieved with a group policy:

Disable macros in Office documents: Select the Disable macros in Office applications option and enable this policy.
Apply policies: After configuration, the policies must be updated. This is done using the command gpupdate /forcein the command prompt.
