Yesterday was World Press Freedom Day , celebrated around the world and used to remind governments of the need to respect their commitments to press freedom. It was proclaimed in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly following the recommendation of the UNESCO General Conference. It is celebrated every May 3 to coincide with the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a botim database seminar organized by UNESCO in the capital of Namibia in 1991, in which African journalists and media representatives drew up a document that set out the principles of press freedom.
