The optimal featured image size for rectangular images is 1200 x 687 pixels. However, for themes that use square featured images, the best size is 600 x 600 pixels.

WordPress will automatically create copies of your featured images to add to different areas of your website, such as your blog page , archive pages, and homepage .
WordPress themes come with their own image sizes, but sometimes you need to change the size of your featured image.
