Image search has become increasingly popular in recent years. Especially with the new technologies developed by Google and additional user experience improvements made in SERP, image SEO has become more important than ever. That's why I have examined the term image SEO in depth in my article and tried to explain the importance of images in terms of SEO and the optimization methods that can be done.
Filters in search results have evolved and changed over the years. As you can see in the example below, you can easily filter by color, size and time. In addition, sample queries that may be relevant are shown to users. In other words, the more detail you provide, the closer you can get to your target audience with the help of filters.
With an innovation made on August 6, 2019 , images started to open on the right side when clicked. In other words, innovations continue on the visual side as well;
Google also announced in July that it would start adding knowledge graphs to visual results . If you’d like to watch the presentation “How To Make Google Image Search Work For You” by Gary Illyes at Digitalzone, you can check out this video .
Before going into details, I would like to mention a section from the video where John Mueller from Google explains the optimization methods that can be applied to images;
1. High Quality Images
Higher quality images will provide users with more detail and will be more attractive in image searches. Of course, when using very high quality images, you should also keep in mind that these images can negatively affect your site speed if not optimized. You can use sites like for image optimizations, and this way you can eliminate problems that may occur in page opening speed.
I should mention this statistic right at the beginning: Mobile searches for images have increased by over 60% in the last 2 years. (Google, 2019)
Using low-quality images, especially in the main images and job seekers database additional product images on e-commerce sites, can have a negative impact on your sales. It would be more beneficial to choose high-quality images that clearly show the products. Let's briefly discuss 4 popular image file formats;
JPG : JPG files are lightweight and easy to compress. This means you can create images of various sizes and save on loading time. However, as JPG files get smaller, they lose resolution and tend to compress more.
WebP : You can make better optimizations using WebP. If you want, you can examine this topic in detail in our friend Gökhan's Webp article.
PNG : PNGs are high quality and do not lose resolution even after compression. This makes them a great format for infographics and illustrations. However, PNGs are usually very large files and therefore not very suitable for use on websites.
In addition to these file types, you can provide much more information using a single GIF. We should also mention Google's suggestion;
File formats supported by Google Images are BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, and SVG.
You can also consider scaling your images according to the screen size so that you can optimize them better. I also recommend using lazy loading for images.
2. Structured Data
Structured data works in every aspect of SEO. I recommend you to take a look at the structured data article I wrote before . Make sure to mark the images correctly in the schema markups you will create for page types such as product, video or recipe.
